ne of the livestock projects carried out on a large scale in FELDA Layang-layang is raising cattle of the Kedah-Kelantan breed. The project is carried out in a group that involves four people: Misdan Sabanain, Tokimat Yusof, Togimat Surip and Saikan Busran.
Initially, there were only five cattle and one male supported by the Simpang Renggam District Veterinary Office. After five years, the number has increased to 400. The cattle are left to graze in the oil-palm plantation of the owners.
However, the oil-palm plantation is electrically fenced to avoid the cattle from straying and getting lost. According to Misdan, a complete set of the electrical fence for one acre costs about RM1, 200. It will produce a small electric shock when the cattle sniff the fence with their wet noses.
“One electric shock is enough to keep a cow away from the fence forever,” says Misdan smiling.
