The siege of Bukit Kepong that occurred in February 23, 1950 is still fresh in the memories of the residents of Bukit Kepong, Johore. The bloody incident was a distinct example of the marked cruelty of the communists during the emergency period. The Bukit Kepong Police Station was situated at the edge of Sungai Muar then. At about 4.15 am on that ill fated day, the wooden police station was attacked by approximately 200 communists. The police officers had fought valiantly to defend their police station from being overtaken despite repeated orders by the communists to surrender. Unfortunately, due to their small number the police officers began to loose ground as one by one officer fell in the battle that lasted for five hours. Eventually, the communists gained control of the police station and burnt it to the ground. Fourteen policemen, four village guards, three auxiliary policemen, a woman and her three children were killed during the massacre.
