The Malays Are The Majority

T
he Malays form the majority ethnic group in Parit Abdul Rahman Village, while the Chinese, which numbered to less than a thousand people makes up to around 20 percent of the total number of the population.

The Malay Culture is synonymous with the life of the residents here. As for the Chinese, they still practise their customs and traditions without having to cause any discomfort or ill feelings to other etchnic or religious groups.

The lifestyle of the residents of this village is similar to those of other villages’. Some of them work in the government or private sectors, while some work on their own. As for the housewives, they are the ones who make sure that their households are in peaceful and harmonious condition.

The origin of the residents of Parit Abdul Rahman Village could be traced back to the community of the Bugis etchnic group. It is not too wrong to say that almost all of the villagers here are the descendants of Bugis people who originally came from the Riau Archipelago and Java Island.

The Bugis people, at one time, loved to explore the sea and its surrounding areas. Indeed, they were known for their competent skills as sailors. On top of that, their love for the sea was also due to the fact that they managed to get good returns from harvesting the wealth of the sea. Pontian Town is indeed located and surrounded by the sea.
