Sagil’s Origin

S
agil comes from the Chinese word SAA-IT or SAA-YET meaning ‘Sand of Happiness’ or ‘Heavenly Sand’. This word has been commercialised by the local villagers and now it is known as Sagil. In its early days in 1927, Kampung Parit Sagil 2 was a swampy forest area but now its geographical landscape has changed and is more suited to agricultural activities.

In the early settlement period, the Javanese lived in this village and worked as labourers in Tanah Merah Estate. Later, they decided to live at the edge of the estate area (now known as Parit Sagil 2). They tried subsistence farming but failed as wild animals like elephants and wild boar destroyed their crops. Thus, they decided to turn the farmland into their settlement.

To date, this village has been selected as one of the Gerak Daya Wawasan (visionary force movement) village due to its development, peaceful and quality village administration. The community here look forward in developing their village and achieving a quality standard of living in tandem with the nation’s development.
