The Jarak tree, scientific name JATROPHA CURCAS has distinctive features. It gives as much as 33% oil and can live for a relatively long period. It is easy to take care of and is not easily attacked by insects and worms. The tree grows quickly, and not to a great height, making its fruits easy to pick. It grows well in tropical climates and bears fruit after 6 months. The harvest doubles after two years and in this time, produces 3.6 tonnes per hectare. In 30 years, returns are guaranteed at RM0.85 a kilo to the farmers.
